On Aug. 9, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs announced several steps to expand access to VA benefits for veterans who served at Karshi-Khanabad Air Base (K2) in Uzbekistan after Sept. 11, 2001, as well as their survivors.![]()

Ayva said that volunteering with the VA through DAV showed her that she can use and develop her skills to give back to her community and serve the people around her. The scholarship relieved some financial pressure so that she could pursue opportunities the typical student summer job doesn’t afford. ![]()

“The positive impacts that I did and that I was able to do because I now had this scholarship money were so much more impactful to the world and to myself than getting a job,” Ayva said. “You’re investing your time in yourself in ways you couldn’t do if you were paid.”![]()

Each year DAV offers more than $110,000 in scholarships to be used toward any accredited institution of higher learning, including universities, colleges, community colleges and vocational schools. The deadline for applicants to apply for 2025 scholarships is February 28. Learn more at dav.la/scholarships.![]()

DAV Scholarships are open to volunteers age 21 or younger who have contributed a minimum of 100 hours credited through DAV or DAV Auxiliary. If you know of a young adult who meets these criteria, please share this post with them and have them apply.
At a time where many of us are gathering around tables filled with loved ones, sharing laughter and joy, we cannot forget those who are suffering. In the years since the Second Battle of Fallujah, Navy veteran Sean Aragon's hand still shakes. He developed a speech problem, which was never an issue, and breaks down when triggered by the memories. ![]()

"There isn't a day that I don't consider the three Marines I lost," he said. "All of these memories overlaid on top of each other, and it's like a film reel." ![]()
