VETERAN DENTAL CARE:
WHY VETERAN
ORAL
HEALTH MATTERS

DO VETERANS QUALIFY FOR VA DENTAL BENEFITS?
Veterans have higher rates of gum disease, missing teeth, and filled teeth, compared to non-veterans, but out
of more than 9 million veterans who are eligible for medical care through the VA, approximately 26% are eligible
for dental coverage.*
This creates a significant challenge for veterans, as limited access to oral health care can negatively affect their overall health. Without proper dental coverage, veterans pay more in out-of-pocket costs and risk developing or exacerbating health conditions such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

WHY VETERAN ORAL HEALTH MATTERS FOR OVERALL WELL-BEING
Your mouth is the gateway to your body, and prioritizing your oral health is key to maintaining your overall wellbeing. Poor oral health has been linked to serious health conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes and strokes.
Oral health and heart disease
The American Heart Association advocates that good oral health is an important factor in reducing the risk of heart disease, and those with gum disease are almost twice as likely to suffer from heart disease as those with healthy gums. Poor oral hygiene can cause bacteria to be transported to your blood and your heart.
Oral health problems unique
to veterans
According to a recent study, 42% of Veterans have had gum problems or bone loss around their teeth, and 56% have had tooth decay. It’s important to get regular cleanings and exams to prevent any serious problems from occurring. “Veterans cannot be healthy without good oral health,” the study concluded.
Prevention is key
Brushing and flossing twice a day and having your teeth cleaned professionally on a regular basis helps lower the risk that oral bacteria will enter the bloodstream and create an infection. This is especially important for those who have certain chronic health conditions or compromised immune systems.
Regular checkups and cleanings can help prevent cavities as well as periodontal (gum) disease. Dentists can catch problems early and treat them while screening for other conditions.

- Meet other specific criteria
Coverage levels vary, and in some cases, care may be limited to specific treatments.
HOW VETERANS CAN GET DENTAL COVERAGE
For veterans who are not eligible for dental coverage through the VA, there are still affordable options available.
The Veterans Affairs Dental Insurance Program (VADIP) offers dental coverage to eligible veterans and CHAMPVA enrollees, helping bridge the gap in access to care.
Delta Dental offers VADIP plans approved by the VA with coverage designed specifically for veterans and their families. These plans make it easier to maintain regular dental care and support overall health.
Delta Dental VADIP plans include:
Preventive services
100% coverage for in-network preventive services such as cleanings, exams, and X-rays
National provider network
Access to a large, directly-contracted national network
Plan options
Three flexible plan options to fit different needs and budgets
Having a dental plan can make preventive care and consistent at-home routines more manageable, helping you stay ahead of more serious health issues.
